What Is the Difference Between In-Home and At-Home Treatment?

When people think of substance use and behavioral health treatment, they often think of more traditional treatment models. As times have changed, though, different treatment methods have become available. These include both at-home and in-home treatment. But what is the difference between these models? And which is best for you?

Below is some great information about the different types of treatment models in order to help you to make a more informed decision when choosing the form of treatment that is right to meet your needs…

Different Models of Treatment

In-Person

In-person treatment is the most common model of treatment and it’s what most people think of when substance use disorder comes to mind. This model involves a patient visiting a rehab center throughout the week (outpatient) or living in the facility (inpatient). While these options offer a high level of care, they can also be extremely inconvenient for those that have outside obligations. They also often involve group therapy, which may or may not be the right option for a patient.

At-Home

At-home treatment is a method that became very popular during the COVID-19 lockdown and is still pretty common today. At-home involves the patient receiving treatment from their computer. While this makes receiving treatment easier than in-person rehabs, it also means less face-to-face time with a specialist. It means you won’t be able to receive treatment if your internet is affected by an outage, as well.

In-Home

In-home treatment is not the same as at-home treatment. Whereas at-home treatment involves the patient logging on for video appointments, in-home treatment involves specialists visiting the home of the patient to administer top-quality substance use treatment services. This allows the patient to continue to meet their obligations and live at home, instead of checking in to a facility or commuting to the facility multiple times per week for hours at a time.
