The Sports Betting Epidemic: How Deregulation Has Led to an Increase in Problematic Gambling

You’ve seen the ads everywhere for companies like Draft Kings. Sporting events have running odds that update frequently and even show on screen. Commentators discuss the odds during the game. The ubiquity has made avoiding the idea of sports betting impossible.

Whether or not sports betting is ruining sports is a hotly debated topic, but what is more important is how it affects viewers and those who choose to participate in this seemingly innocuous form of gambling.

The problem is, it’s not innocuous and can lead to some major consequences for those who have addictive tendencies.

Is Sports Betting Addictive?

Like any other form of betting, sports betting can be addictive. This form of addiction falls under the category of what is called “process addiction”. This category includes behavioral addictions such as gambling, sex, food, shopping, social media, and more. While there is not the same physical component as there is for drugs or alcohol, the psychological addiction can lead to cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and the potential for relapse.

With the rise of sports betting and deregulation may come a rise in gambling problems.

As this is the case, it is extremely important to seek help when sports betting becomes problematic.

Am I Addicted to Sports Betting?

There are a few signs of addiction you can look for to better determine if you may be addicted to sports betting. These include:

·        Inability to stop or even pause when met with significant consequences

·        Loss of significant amounts of income

·        The inability to pay rent, a mortgage, or other bills

·        Strain on relationships due to gambling

·        Problems with work and other obligations due to gambling

·        Chasing the high of a win

·        Lying and sneaking around

·        Increasing bet sizes

If you are experiencing these or other problematic issues, consider reaching out for professional support to address your possible gambling addiction.
