Substance Use and Seniors: It’s Never Too Late to Ask for Help

When people think about treatment centers and substance use disorders, they often think about patients that are younger. There are a lot of anti-drinking and -drug campaigns targeted at teenagers and younger adults. It seems rare that you see a senior citizen mentioned or even shown in ads for treatment centers and PSAs.

The problem is seniors do suffer from substance use disorder. Whether it is because of the stigma some seniors feel or the lack of knowledge about resources, many seniors simply suffer from their substance use disorder in silence without knowing if they can or should get help.

Below is more information about senior substance use, and what options there are for seniors suffering from addiction.

Is Substance Use Disorder Prevalent Among Seniors?

Substance use disorder is much more prevalent among seniors than many people may think. As per the National Institute on Drug Abuse:

“Nearly 1 million adults aged 65 and older live with a substance use disorder (SUD), as reported in 2018 data.”

That alarming number shows that substance use disorder doesn’t go away over time. People of all ages require assistance with their substance use disorder.

Seniors are particularly at risk for prescription medication addiction, as their exposure to these medications is higher on average.

If your loved one or you are experiencing symptoms of substance use disorder or addiction, reach out for help. It’s never too late to receive treatment.

Are There Resources for Seniors?

Yes! There are treatment options available for seniors. One option that is great for seniors is in-home treatment like that provided by Front Door Health. In-home treatment allows seniors to receive treatment from the comfort of their own homes, without having to visit an outpatient program or move into an inpatient treatment facility. For many seniors (especially those with health concerns and mobility issues), this option is preferable.

Front Door Health specializes in in-home treatment for patients that suffer from substance use disorders. This may be an addiction to a specific substance or multiple substances. We also provide help for those with dual-diagnosis disorders.

Front Door Health takes a scientific approach to treatment, and we create custom treatment plans for our patients to ensure their success. Our team believes patients should get the treatment they need when they need it. That’s why we offer immediate treatment for patients (often same-day enrollment!).

Our in-home treatment approach allows patients to receive the care they need in a safe and comfortable environment.

If you would like to learn more about in-home treatment, contact Front Door Health today. We’re happy to answer any questions and provide you with the help you need.
