Strategies to Stay Sober Over the Holidays

The Holiday season is full of cheer but, for some, it is also a time where triggers abound, and relapse is a looming possibility. With that said, it’s far from impossible to stay sober over the Holidays!

Below are some quick tips to help you stay sober over the Holiday season…

Identify Your Triggers

The first thing you’ll want to do is identify your triggers. This may be family, Holiday parties with alcohol, certain Holiday events, and so on. If you know what is likely to trigger you, you can better have a plan in place or even avoid activities that may trigger you entirely.

Have a Plan in Place

If you are entering into a potentially triggering situation, it’s good to have a plan in place. For instance, if you are going to visit family and you know they sometimes get under your skin, have an exit strategy ready. If you are visiting family that live out of town, consider staying at a hotel so you can leave when convenient.

Before you attend a family event, let them know that you may need to step out at some point. If you let them know in advance, they won’t be surprised and may be more understanding and accommodating.

If you plan on staying home for the Holidays, consider activities with friends and other activities to keep you occupied in a healthy way. You also may want to consider professional support to better ensure your sobriety.

Schedule Therapy Sessions

If you would like some professional support over the holidays, make sure to schedule some therapy sessions in advance. You also should work with a company that is available on-call in case you need a higher level of care in a time of need.

Front Door Health provides in-home therapeutic services—even during the Holiday season. We are here to support you when you need it most.
