Adderall Addiction: How a “Study Drug” Can Become a Major Problem

College can be very difficult. There are many tough courses, which means lots of studying. The difficulty can be compounded for those that have to work through college. A major part of going to college is socializing as well, which leaves even less time for studying.

In order to keep up, many students look for ways to do it all without making any sacrifices to their social or work life. One thing students do to try to give themselves the extra edge when it comes to school and studying is to take Adderall without a prescription.

While this may seem like a good idea on the surface, in reality, it can be extremely problematic.

Below is more information about why students use Adderall, whether it is safe to take without a prescription, and what to do if Adderall use is difficult or impossible to stop.

Why Is Adderall Misuse So Common?

There are a couple of main reasons Adderall misuse is so common. One is the effects. As Adderall increases focus, many use the drug to study for long sessions. Another reason Adderall is used so often is the fact that it is a common prescription, and it is easy for many students to get ahold of.

As stated in an article published by the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison:

“Some students may be more inclined to illegally use Adderall in comparison to other drugs because they can buy it from a friend. And buying from someone you know raises less concern about the drug being cut with other substances…

Studies show 5 to 35 percent of college students have tried Adderall without a prescription and are twice as likely to use the drug as non-students in their age group.”

Is Adderall Safe?

There are a couple of main reasons students take Adderall—to be able to focus and to party.

By combining Adderall with alcohol, many believe they are able to drink more without getting drunk. The reality is, this is not the case. Even if the person using the substances feels like the effects are mitigated by mixing them, it’s not true. This can lead to overdose and long-term health issues.

Adderall can also be dangerous to mix with other prescription medications.

Should I Take Adderall?

If you are prescribed Adderall by a doctor and are being monitored, yes, you can take prescription Adderall. With that said, if you notice any negative side effects or you start taking more than prescribed, speak with your doctor.

If you are not prescribed Adderall, you should not use the substance. It can be extremely dangerous and can be addictive.
