3 Signs That Your Drinking Is Affecting Your Loved Ones

The last thing you want is to hurt the ones you love the most.

With that said, if you have a substance use disorder, your drinking may be causing damage you aren’t fully aware of.

If you suspect that your drinking is hurting those that you love but aren’t sure what signs to look for to see if your drinking is truly problematic—consider the signs below. They will help you to better determine if your drinking is affecting your loved ones. From there, you can seek the help you need.

#1: They Don’t Trust You

One of the easiest signs to look for is whether or not your loved ones have stopped trusting you. This may mean trusting you to act politely, be on time for things, or simply drink reasonably.

As an example, if you are drunk at a party and you hear your friend say something like, “Well, that’s normal. I’m not surprised. I told you they would be tipsy,” that’s a big sign they don’t trust you anymore. The same goes for, “I didn’t expect him/her to even come. I’m not surprised they are late.”

There are a lot of possible examples, but this should give you the overall gist.

#2: Romantic Relationship Dysfunction

If you are fighting with your significant other more than you used to, it’s always good to take a look at the underlying reasons so they can be resolved. If you believe drinking may be a factor, you may want to try cutting back. If you are unable to, it may be time to seek treatment.

#3: Your Friends and Loved Ones Describe You As “Different” When Drinking

Have you ever heard a loved one say you are a “different person” when you are drinking? This may mean you make poor decisions, get into fights, or even scream and become violent. They may describe you as being sweet, loving, and caring when you are sober, but a “different person entirely” when you are drinking. This is a major sign that your drinking is hurting those around you and is causing significant problems.
