The 6 Dimensions of Health

Part I of this blog series explored three dimensions of health (Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual) that are important to address as part of a recovery program. This blog post will describe the remaining three – Mental, Occupational, and Social - and how Front Door Health can support you as you improve these aspects of your life.

Mental

It is not what happens to us, but how we think about what happens to us, that affects our emotions. Achieving good mental health involves taking a closer look at our thoughts and perceptions to identify unhealthy and irrational thought patterns that could be negatively impacting our emotional states. Sometimes, we ruminate, or chew over things that are outside of our control, which doesn’t do us any favors and may produce cravings for alcohol to calm our minds.

Your FDH Care Team will help you identify and learn tools to manage triggering thought patterns so that you spend more time thinking about things that are important to you.

Occupational

While having stable, satisfying employment is not a requirement for successful recovery, many of us may find ourselves in jobs that are unfulfilling and draining, which can lead to burnout and drinking. If work is an important part of our lives and identity, we want to do what we can to get the most out of our current job or find something that better aligns with our values and goals.

Your FDH Care Team can provide career counseling to help you explore your current career and, if appropriate, find alternative jobs and/or volunteer opportunities that will bring you more satisfaction in the long-term.

Social

Many of us isolated ourselves during our drinking days. When we get into recovery, we may feel disconnected from friends and family - and the thought of building a support network in early recovery may be overwhelming. The good news is that to benefit from human connection, we don’t need to build an expansive support network – just having a couple of friends or acquaintances can go a long way toward feeling more connected with others.

Your FDH Care Team will support you as you rebuild past relationships and identify new opportunities to build positive connections with others.
