What Do I Do with My Pet If I Want to Go to Rehab?

Going to rehab is difficult enough when it’s just you. But what do you do if you have a pet that needs to be taken care of? For outpatient treatment, mid-day care for your pet will need to be considered. For inpatient care, your pet will need someone to take care of them for a long period of time.

Below are a couple of options you can consider for what to do with your pet while you are in rehab, as well as one option where you don’t have to worry about your pet at all…

Pet-Sitting

If you are in outpatient treatment, one option may be pet sitting. Some have friends or family members that can help out with this, but others do not. It also puts a burden on loved ones, as outpatient treatment requires the patient to visit the rehab facility multiple times throughout the week for hours on end.

Another pet-sitting option is paying for a pet sitter/walker. While this option comes with less strain on loved ones, it does mean some additional strain on your wallet.

Boarding

For inpatient care, boarding may be your best option. This is when you leave your pet at a facility for a period of time where they are cared for by a staff of trained professionals. While your pet will be fed and cared for, they also may have limited access to large spaces. Some boarding facilities will take your dog out four to six times a day, but the rest of the time they are kept in a closed-off space.

It is not recommended that dogs are boarded for long periods of time (over a month), and it can be extremely difficult for dogs with behavioral issues or separation anxiety.

Choose In-Home Treatment Instead

One option that many patients aren’t even aware of is in-home treatment. Front Door Health offers behavioral health and dual diagnosis services from the comfort of your own home. As you don’t have to leave your house, you don’t have to worry about hiring a pet sitter or boarding your dog. Instead, you can receive the care you need and snuggle up with your pup or kitty as soon as you’re finished for the day!
