What Do I Do If I Relapse?

What Do I Do If I Relapse?

If you have recently experienced a relapse, your first step needs to be accepting the relapse and not letting it define you. Your journey isn’t over, and you haven’t failed.

Beyond this initial step, there are a few things you should (and shouldn’t) do once you relapse. Below are some tips for getting back on track after a relapse…

Don’t Panic

It can be easy to panic after a relapse. This panic can lead to a shame spiral, anxiety, and other emotions that can increase the chances of another relapse.

DON’T PANIC. Take a breather. Be objective. You relapsed, but now you are reading up on how to handle the situation. That’s good, you are being proactive.

Don’t Beat Yourself Up

It’s cliché, but we really do all make mistakes. Every journey has bumps in the road. This isn’t a bump that will knock you off course, though. It’s just a reminder to stay on course.

There’s no need to beat yourself up. What happened is in the past. Look forward to a brighter future.

Avoid Situations Where Relapse is More Likely

If you went to your neighborhood bar with friends to shoot pool, went to a party, or hung out anywhere else (or with anyone) that increased your chances of relapse, avoid that person or place.

Reach Out for Support

Now is a good time to reach out to your support system. Find a friend or family member that won’t judge and is willing to help you find treatment. If you are already enrolled in a treatment program, reach out to a counselor for help.

You deserve support and sobriety.

We Are Here to Support You Through the Whole Process

Front Door Health is here to support you through your entire journey of sobriety—including any setbacks. We don’t take a “back to day 1” approach. Instead, we focus on what can be done to provide the additional support you need to stay on track.

Sobriety isn’t a series of sprints. We focus on long-term, personalized care intended to meet your specific needs. We don’t judge—we just take an objective look at the circumstances that led to a relapse and make adjustments.
