The Stress of Change—How Change Affects Mental Health

Change can be very difficult. Whether it is a move, a divorce, a new job, or any other form of change, it can cause a lot of stress. This stress, in turn, can affect a person’s mental health.

How Change Can Affect Mental Health

There are a variety of different ways in which change can affect mental health. Some of the ways the stress from change can manifest itself (as outlined by WebMD and reviewed by Dan Brennan, MD) include:

·       Depression or anxiety

·       Headaches

·       Trouble sleeping or insomnia

·       Muscle tension and backaches

·       High blood pressure and heart problems

·       Eating too much or too little

·       Digestive problems and stomachaches

·       Irritability

·       Alcohol or drug abuse

Change can affect not only the mind but also the body. This creates a feedback loop. For instance, irritability and depression can contribute to a lack of sleep, heart problems, and digestive problems. This can affect a person’s mood, adding to the stress the person is experiencing.

Change is also a huge trigger for many that suffer from substance abuse disorders and addiction. In order to cope with the stress of change, many turn to alcohol and/or drugs. This creates a new set of problems.

It’s important to deal with change in a healthy way and seek support if you need help navigating the changes you are going through.

Tips for Navigating Change in a Healthy Way

Consider It as an Opportunity

No matter what change you are going through, it may be an opportunity for growth.

Leaving a job allows you to find a new and better job. Ending a relationship allows you to seek a healthier and happier relationship.

Focus on the positive that comes with the change.

Concentrate On What Stays the Same

Even when you are experiencing big changes in your life, other things will stay the same. Focus on finding some normalcy—especially in the positive areas of your life.

Seek Help

Change can be very difficult to go through on your own. If you have a support system you can rely on, reach out. See if your loved ones are available to listen. Spend some time with friends and family. They want you to be happy and healthy. It’s okay to ask for some additional support when you are going through a tough time.

If you are experiencing depression, anxiety, substance abuse, or physical symptoms of stress seek professional help. It’s important for your safety to receive professional treatment for these conditions.
