Is Sports Gambling Addictive? How Gambling on Sports Can Be Destructive

If you watch just about any sporting event (some more than others), you are probably aware of sports betting. Beyond being aware, though, you may have recently found yourself putting money on sporting events. Over time, this money can really add up. But what happens when the losses really start to cause problems in your life? And what do you do if you can’t stop?

Below is more information about sports gambling, whether it’s addictive, and what you can do if you can’t stop gambling on sports.

What Has Led to the Rise of Sports Gambling?

Sports gambling has traditionally been illegal in many states, including the state of Illinois. Recently, though, sports gambling has been legalized in a lot of states in which it was previously illegal. In the state of Illinois, sports gambling was legalized as recently as 2020!

With sports betting being the only legal form of gambling in many places and a lack of laws regarding advertising, it’s no surprise that many have started placing bets on their favorite events. On top of it being legal, though, it is also highly advertised. It’s almost impossible to avoid ads for sports betting companies if you are a sports fan. Sports betting is also easily accessible with a smartphone and available 24/7.

Take its ubiquity and combine it with “free” first bets and the situation gets problematic very quickly.

Is Sports Gambling Addictive?

Yes. Like any other form of gambling, sports betting is addictive—and these companies know it. You can tell they are aware by the disclaimers (regarding the addictive nature of betting) that are added to the ads these companies run.

Part of how sports betting companies get customers hooked is by creating opportunities for new participants that are hard to ignore. This includes promotions such as the “bet $5 to win $200” you’ve likely heard of by now. They also hire many celebrity endorsers that fans love and respect.

Paul Getzendanner, CEO of Front Door Health, has very strong opinions on sports betting and the companies that have sprung up so quickly:

“The ‘$5 for $200’ and ‘your first bet is free’ deals are classic drug dealer moves,” Paul says, “It’s like giving the first bag of heroin away for free. It’s also easier than ever to get the instant gratification that comes from gambling without the need of going to a racetrack or calling a bookie. It’s just a few clicks away.”

On top of this, many companies make it difficult to cancel. This encourages customers to rethink their cancellations and continue gambling.
