How to Stay Upbeat in Early Sobriety

Early sobriety is a rocky time for many people. There are a lot of ups and downs, and it can be difficult to avoid feelings, thoughts, and emotions that aren’t helpful. With that said, staying upbeat and optimistic is key to success and can make a huge difference when it comes to reaching your recovery goals.

But how do you stay upbeat in early sobriety? Is there a way to shake off the blues? And what should you do if you are having trouble getting and staying sober?

How to Stay Upbeat in Early Sobriety

In order to stay upbeat and thrive in sobriety, consider trying some (or all) of the tips below:

Self-Care

Self-care is something that everyone should be practicing—whether or not they are sober or getting sober. It is extremely helpful when it comes to boosting our self-esteem, staying positive, and soothing ourselves in difficult times.

There are quite a few ways that you can practice self-care. Some of these include:

·      Taking a bath

·      Watching your favorite movie

·      Treating yourself to a nice dinner

·      Meditating

·      Verbalizing positive affirmations

·      Listing your accomplishments

·      Wrapping yourself up in a soft blanket

·      Petting your dog or cat

·      Going for a walk

·      Yoga

Going Out with Friends

You’ve heard before that humans are social creatures, and this is why isolation can be so detrimental when it comes to our mood. While we all need some alone time to recharge our batteries, many find they isolate themselves when they are first getting sober—which can make it that much more difficult.

Instead, hang out with some supportive friends that are willing to partake in some fun activities without drinking or using drugs. Go to a movie, grab a bite to eat, or simply play some board games at home. The important thing is socialization in a safe way that doesn’t test your sobriety.

Mastery

Whether it’s learning woodworking, a new language, an instrument, a martial art, or anything else that requires study and practice, learning a new skill can help you to create a feeling of mastery. This feeling of accomplishment can give you a major self-esteem boost, which will help you to stay positive and upbeat.

Music

There are so many great songs out there that can lift your mood, help you get through tough times, and provide you with a sense of catharsis. There are even songs written specifically about sobriety! Make an upbeat playlist that you can listen to when you need a little boost in your mood.

Having Trouble Staying Sober?

Staying upbeat is a very important element of early sobriety, but it isn’t the only thing that goes into getting and staying sober. If you are having a difficult time staying sober on your own, you may want to consider a higher level of care.
