How to Speak with Your Loved One About Getting Help

Casey Pletcher • Aug 02, 2022

Addiction is a disease that doesn’t just hurt the person suffering from it—it also hurts the people around them who love them the most. It is extremely difficult watching a loved one go down a dangerous path. But how do you speak with your loved one about getting help?

Below are some tips for discussing treatment options with your loved one:

Approach the Topic

Approaching the topic is often the most difficult part. There is a good chance that things could go poorly if the topic isn’t approached in the right way. Be very gentle when approaching the topic, but make sure your loved one understands how serious you take their addiction. The conversation should be loving, but not casual. This is a serious topic and needs to be taken seriously.

Listen

It isn’t enough to simply listen to what they say and wait for your turn to speak. You need to actively listen.
Active listening involves asking open-ended questions, giving your loved one your complete attention, and taking time to summarize occasionally.

You want to make sure your loved one feels seen and heard.

Be Helpful

If your loved one decides they are ready to move forward with the process, be as helpful as possible. See how you can help them to get treatment and be supportive every step of the way. Keep in mind, this is likely the most difficult thing they’ve ever done. Give them the love and support they need.

Accept the Results

This is one of the hardest parts for many people. You may do everything in your power to encourage your loved one to get the help they need, but they may not take the help. Make sure when you go into the conversation you remove yourself from the results and accept your loved one’s decision. It is their life and their choice. As much as you love them, you can’t force them to seek treatment.
