Get More Zs! How to Improve Your Sleep Quality

Be honest…are you getting enough sleep?

It is recommended that adults get at least 7 hours of sleep each night, but many get much less—and you may be one of them.

But why is sleep important? And how can you improve your sleep quality? Below is more information about the importance of sleep, along with some tips to ensure you get the best sleep possible.

Why Is Sleep Important?

Sleep is important for a number of reasons. Some of these reasons include:

·      Mood regulation

·      Heart health

·      Hormone regulation

·      Metabolism

·      And more

Getting enough sleep can lower your chances of stroke, improve your mood, increase your attention span, lower your risk of high blood pressure, and so much more. You literally need sleep to function and survive…

How to Improve Your Sleep Quality

There are a few things that you can do to improve your sleep quality. Some tips for improving your sleep quality include:

Don’t Drink or Use Drugs Before Sleep

While drinking and using certain drugs can help with going to sleep (or passing out), they aren’t great for the actual quality of your sleep. Drugs and alcohol can lead to restless sleep, interfere with your sleep cycle, and lead to waking up throughout the night.

Cut the drinking and drug use to ensure you get the best sleep possible.

Turn Off Your Phone

It is important to turn your phone off (or at least stop looking at it) to decrease your exposure to blue light (which keeps you awake). Electronic devices in general should be turned off an hour or two before bed to improve your sleep.

Keep a Regular Sleep Schedule

Your circadian rhythm (or your internal clock) helps you to regulate many functions—including sleep. Your body will naturally get used to going to sleep and waking up at a certain time if you are regular with your sleeping patterns. If you aren’t, it can make it difficult to fall asleep.

Stop Drinking Caffeine

Caffeine helps to keep you up. So, it’s intuitive to stop drinking caffeine at night. With that said, around what time should you stop? Studies have shown that taking in any kind of caffeine 6 hours before sleep can affect your sleep quality. Make sure you drink that last cup of coffee early!
