Are There Alternatives to Inpatient Treatment?

When people think of treatment for substance use, behavioral health, mental health, or dual diagnosis disorders, they often think of inpatient treatment. Images of sitting in a circle in a stale environment come to mind, where patients have to open up to strangers and live in a facility with little-to-no engagement with the outside world.

While the reality isn’t as bleak as it is often portrayed in movies, some of the cliches of inpatient treatment remain true. Inpatient generally is built around group sessions which involve opening up to strangers, along with living in the facility with little contact with the outside world. This isn’t a bug; it’s a feature. Inpatient treatment is designed in a way that the patient is removed from outside temptations and the “real world.” While this can be helpful for some, for others it isn’t the best option.

Some patients, for instance, don’t like opening up in front of strangers. Others can’t take time off work to check into a facility. Just as there are advantages to inpatient, there are plenty of disadvantages as well. So, what other options are available? Are there alternatives?

Below are some alternative treatment options, along with more information about the advantages of in-home treatment.

Alternatives to Inpatient Treatment

There are a few options outside of inpatient treatment that may be available to a patient. These include:

·      In-home treatment

·      Telehealth

·      Outpatient

The outpatient model is often similar to the inpatient model, with the main difference being the patient being able to return home after treatment. So, the patient will visit the treatment center after school or work for a few hours a day, then return home.

The telehealth model was made more popular during COVID-19 and involves the patient calling in to sessions as opposed to visiting in person.

Finally, there is the in-home treatment model, which has become more popular recently and combines the best of both inpatient and telehealth into a single model that allows for a high level of care without the need to check into an inpatient facility or even leave the home.

What Is In-Home Treatment?

In-home treatment is a higher level of care that involves a patient receiving treatment for their substance use, behavioral health, and/or mental health condition from the comfort of their own home. This form of care requires no commute or telehealth appointments. Instead, top providers in the field visit the home of the patient and administer care where they are most comfortable.

What Are the Advantages of In-Home Treatment?

There are a lot of advantages to in-home treatment. Some of the main benefits include:

Treatment from the Comfort of Your Own Home

Leaving the home and receiving care in a foreign environment can be difficult. Not only does it mean physically visiting a new location you aren’t comfortable in, but it also often means opening up to strangers.

In-home treatment allows you to receive care from the comfort of your own home, working one-on-one with trained addiction and recovery specialists and doctors. There is no need for group sessions with strangers or leaving the house for treatment.

Continue to Meet Your Work and Life Obligations

One big barrier for patients looking to receive treatment for their substance use, behavioral health, and/or mental health treatment is the inability to put their lives on hold. You may have work, school, family, or other obligations that make checking into a facility impossible and can even get in the way of receiving outpatient care.

The in-home treatment provided by Front Door Health allows you to receive the treatment you need around your schedule. This minimizes the disruption in your day-to-day life and allows you to meet many (if not all) of your obligations while still receiving a high level of care.

Treatment in the “Real World”

While being removed from triggers that occur in a “real world” environment can help patients to focus on recovery, it can also make aftercare extremely difficult. After being removed from isolation, patients often feel overwhelmed being reintroduced to the “real world” and all of the challenges and temptations it brings.

In-home treatment allows you to receive care in a “real world” environment, where you can meet challenges head-on with the support of a caring team of experts.

Family Treatment Options

Family treatment may be an integral part of treatment, as addiction and other disorders often affect the whole family. In-home treatment makes family treatment much easier and more convenient. Instead of working around the schedule of a facility, Front Door Health works around your schedule, which makes it much easier to find the right time to schedule family sessions.
