A Breath of Fresh Air—The Benefits of Nature for Mental Health

When was the last time you visited the great outdoors? Maybe a nature hike, a fishing trip, or camping in the woods? If it’s been a while, it may be time to consider scheduling a trip to spend some time in nature.

There are a lot of benefits of nature for mental health. Below are some of these benefits, along with why you should consider scheduling a peaceful and relaxing trip to visit the great outdoors.

Stress Reduction

Stretching your legs, breathing in some fresh air, and taking in the world around you help a lot with stress reduction. Spending time in nature also allows you to get away from the hustle and bustle of the world of concrete and get you in touch with the stillness of the outside world.

Boost in Mood

There’s a reason why you feel better when you spend time out in nature. Spending time in nature releases feel-good hormones like serotonin and other endorphins. This leaves you both upbeat and relaxed.

Exercise

Getting some exercise is great both for your physical and mental health. Exercise not only focuses us but also releases hormones like dopamine and serotonin. To take it a step further, consider a challenging nature hike or jog (if there is a safe path to jog on).

Mindfulness

Without all of the distractions of your day-to-day life and the white noise of cars, electronics, and other din that comes with living in a heavily-populated area, you are better able to focus on the present moment. This increase in mindfulness allows you to find a deeper level of peace. Nature roots you in the moment and provides you with the quiet and fresh air you need to unwind and let go a bit.

Natural Beauty

The natural world is filled with beauty. With lush trees, furry animals, meadows, rivers, and breathtaking sunsets, just existing out in nature and taking in its beauty is a great way to reset and let go of some of the stress that has built up. It can help to put things in perspective and change your perception. There’s a big, beautiful world out there to enjoy and it’s nice to simply exist in it.
