5 Best Exercises for Seniors in Sobriety

Exercise is extremely important for people of all ages. With that said, many seniors struggle with getting the exercise they need due to physical limitations. There are so many advantages to exercise, though, and it shouldn’t be avoided.

Exercise helps to decrease the chances of chronic illnesses and can help those with heart disease and diabetes significantly. It can also be helpful with alleviating the restlessness and boredom that many in early sobriety experience, along with improving mood.

If you are a sober senior and you are looking for some fun exercise ideas, check out the 5 exercises below!

1. Swimming

Swimming is relaxing, cardio-intensive, and easy on the joints. Many exercises (like jogging) can be particularly difficult for seniors due to their high-impact nature. Swimming is very low-impact, yet still one of the best aerobic exercises possible! Hit your pool on a beautiful day and go for a nice swim to cool off and get some exercise.

2. Shuffleboard

Shuffleboard is so much fun, and it’s easy on the joints. This makes it an ideal exercise for seniors. Check out Royal Palms (https://www.royalpalmschicago.com/) for a fun time out playing shuffleboard. They offer hourly rates and even serve mocktails!

3. Golf

Golf is a fun and challenging game for seniors. It has many benefits for seniors in sobriety, including better cardiovascular fitness, increased strength and flexibility, and more. It also helps with improving mood and allows seniors to spend more time outdoors in the sun!

4. Chair Yoga

Yoga can be a very intense form of exercise, but it also has so many benefits. It is calming, challenging, and a great way to maintain flexibility. For some seniors, though, it can be a bit too much. Thankfully, there is an option for seniors with mobility concerns—chair yoga!

With chair yoga, you can still get a great workout and experience the wonderful mood benefits associated with yoga, even if you aren’t able to hold full-body poses for long periods of time.

5. Go for a Stroll

If you live in Chicago, there is so much to explore! There are beautiful parks, streets full of fun stores, a free zoo, and so much more! Plan some time to simply go out and stretch your legs. It has fantastic health benefits, and it allows you to enjoy the wonderful city of Chicago!
