4 Tips for Improving Your Mindset in Early Sobriety

Your mindset can be a major contributing factor when it comes to your success. With the right mindset, you can achieve amazing things! With that said, the wrong outlook can make challenges that much more difficult…

If you are in early sobriety and you are struggling, you may find a change in mindset helps you to stay on your journey. But what can you do to improve your mindset? And what if a shift in mindset isn’t enough?

Below are 4 fantastic tips for improving your mindset in early sobriety, as well as what you can do if changing your mindset isn’t enough…

1. Focus on Your Accomplishments

No matter where you are in life, you’ve undoubtedly achieved some amazing things. This may include graduating from school, raising children, winning an award, or even helping someone that was in need. You’d be surprised how much your accomplishments add up if you consciously take some time to think about them!

By focusing on your accomplishments, you are able to better see the good in you and how strong and amazing you are!

2. Be Grateful

Gratitude is an important practice that most people—sober or not—neglect. By focusing on what we are grateful for instead of what we don’t have, we can shift our mindset to a more positive outlook.

If there isn’t anything major right now that you can think of, start small. Do you have loved ones? Friends? Food in your stomach? A roof over your head? Clothing on your back? There are so many things to be grateful for!

3. Practice Positive Self-Talk

Beating yourself up isn’t helping. Keep this in mind while you are navigating your feelings in early sobriety. You’ve taken a big step, which is very brave! This is an example of the positive self-talk that you can start incorporating into your life.

Focus on the great things about you and give yourself a nice boost here and there. When you start thinking unhelpful things about yourself, counterbalance it with positive things. Take a moment here and there also to just remind yourself of how great you are.

You have so much to offer the world! Focus on the good things about yourself and let the rest go for now.

4. Set Realistic Goals

It can be difficult to stay on track when your goals are too grandiose. That’s why there is the concept of taking things “one day at a time.” Getting through the day is much easier than trying to get through 10 years of sobriety.

You may also be making changes in your relationships, work life, and more. Remember, a lot of these things take time to grow. For instance, if you’ve done a lot to damage your family’s trust, don’t expect it to come back overnight. Instead, start small by being on time for commitments, showing up when you promise, and giving your loved ones small tokens of your appreciation. This will help you to grow your relationship with your family in a healthy, realistic way over time.

Realistic goals will add up to great accomplishments!
