4 Tips for Being Confident Without “Liquid Courage”

It’s incredible how much alcohol can turn even the biggest introvert into a more sociable and confident person. Sure, not everyone gets “liquid courage” but, for those that do, it can feel like a major boost…and even a necessity.

What happens when you stop drinking, though? Is there a way to maintain the same level of confidence without liquid courage? Below is more about confidence, liquid courage, and what to do if you find you aren’t able to stop drinking.

What If I Need Alcohol to be Confident?

You may feel like you need alcohol to be confident, but this isn’t a fact. You can be confident without the assistance of a drink or a drug. We all have it in us to be able to connect with others and be comfortable in our own skin. It simply may take a little work.

4 Tips for Being Confident Without “Liquid Courage”

Here are some tips to boost your confidence without the help of alcohol:

1.    Get Out More

Sometimes exposure can help a lot when it comes to overcoming fear. This includes the fear of meeting new people and socializing. By going out more often and speaking with new people, you may be able to overcome your social anxiety and even learn to enjoy being around new people.

Consider joining a social club, Meetup group, or other activity-based organization that is intended to help you to meet new people and make friends.

2.    Listen

Oddly enough, being quiet in the right way can help you to better connect with others, which can help a lot with boosting your confidence. But, what does this mean? Surely, being quiet isn’t going to win you any friends, right?

What you’ll need to do is first connect with new people. That’s the hardest part. Then, once you’ve got them engaged in conversation, listen. And this means actively listening. Don’t just wait for your turn to speak.

Ask questions that are open-ended. Be inquisitive. Actually get to know the person. You’d be surprised how much people will open up if you give them the chance to. On top of being able to better hold a conversation, you’ll find people like you a lot more when they feel they can open up to you and they see that you care what they have to say.

3.    Go Out with Good Friends

One great way to meet others is to do so in a group. Go out with some friends (preferably some that are more extroverted). By having fun with friends, it’s easier to let down your guard and meet others. Consider joining a group (like mentioned above) with a friend or two. This can help you to connect with new people with a little less pressure.

4.    See a Therapist

If you find you are still having trouble meeting new people and you are really afraid or lack confidence without liquid courage, consider booking an appointment with a mental health professional. They can help you work through your concerns, boost your confidence, and get to the underlying issues that are getting in your way (so they can be addressed).
