Why Ketamine?

Why Ketamine?

Ketamine is a breakthrough treatment for addiction, depression, and anxiety.  Extensive research shows that ketamine has rapidly-acting anti-depressant effects far beyond other treatments that exist today. It can also help you break bad habits and reset your patterns of thinking, patterns that--when untreated--often worsen the cycles of addiction, depression and anxiety.

FAQs

How does it work?

Ketamine quickly improves mood, impulsivity, and discomfort.  It can be particularly helpful for clients who have not responded to traditional treatments, and it can also produce faster results. Anti-depressant medications, for example, can take months to work (if they do at all), while ketamine treatment can help clients feel better almost immediately. Ketamine can further facilitate psychotherapy by easing the discomfort associated with processing difficult memories and experiences, and by helping you quickly learn new patterns of thinking and behavior.  This can help you address the trauma that so often contributes to addiction.  Numerous clients have told us that their ketamine treatment has been life changing.

Is Ketamine safe?

Is Ketamine safe?

Ketamine has been used and studied for decades. It was originally FDA approved as a surgical anesthetic for the treatment of wounded American soldiers during the Vietnam War. Due to its rapid anti-depressant effects, it was also used in emergency rooms to treat acute mental health crises and reduce the need for inpatient admissions. Over the past 50 years, ketamine has proven to be a safe and effective medication for mental and physical health conditions, even in children. It does not increase your risk of relapse; in fact, it can lower it.

Ketamine FAQ

  • How is the K3 program different from other Ketamine providers?

K3 is administered at your convenience in the privacy and comfort of your home. You won’t have to worry about driving home (which is not recommended) or finding transportation immediately after an infusion. You will experience ketamine in a safe and familiar environment, which can reduce worry and discomfort during the infusion process.

Research demonstrates that ketamine infusions are more effective when integrated with psychotherapy and psychiatry, which many ketamine infusion providers do not offer. Thus, there are huge, missed opportunities to enhance the effectiveness of ketamine treatment. Our treatment team not only makes sure that your ketamine experience is safe and effective, but also provides ongoing therapy and psychiatry before and after sessions to help you process and make the most of these experiences.

  • What is the process for starting the K3 program?

After performing a comprehensive health assessment, you and your treatment team will discuss your goals and create a personalized treatment plan. If ketamine is appropriate, your provider will administer ketamine infusions in your home on your schedule. You will have access to ongoing individual psychotherapy and psychiatry before and after your infusions.

  • How will I feel during my infusion?

Within minutes after receiving an infusion, clients typically feel calm, comfortable, empathic, and experience a sense of detachment from their mind and body. Clients describe having increased awareness and deeper insight into their thoughts and feelings, allowing them to view their issues from a different, oftentimes healthier perspective.

  • How will I feel after my infusion?

After the infusion, you may feel tired, nauseated, or experience minor visual changes. Most clients report that these feelings subside within 1-2 hours. Many clients resume work within hours after their infusion.

  • What are the common side effects of Ketamine?

Clients may experience nausea, fatigue, or dizziness during or immediately following a ketamine infusion. There are no known long-term side effects of ketamine infusions when administered by a trained healthcare provider in a safe environment. If you do start to experience side effects, your provider can adjust the dose or, if necessary, provide medications to treat the side effects.

  • How many infusions will I need to feel better?

For addiction, anxiety, and depression, most clients receive an initial set of 4 infusions over a 4-week period. Based on how the client responds, booster infusions are administered every 3 to 6 months thereafter. The number of infusions needed will depend on your response to treatment, goals, and other factors, which your treatment team will discuss with you.

  • How long are sessions?

Sessions typically last 1-2 hours. You are welcome to listen to music, read a book, or write in a journal, though most clients prefer to relax and just take in the experience. Your healthcare practitioner will monitor your experience to ensure your safety, comfort, and optimal results.

  • Does insurance cover the K3 program?

Currently, ketamine infusions are not covered by insurance for off-label uses. However, FDH offers flexible payment plans to help you cover the cost of the program. Call us today at 773-747-5500 to get a cost estimate.
